Redmi Note vs Lumia 535 Dual SIM India contest

Two more new smartphones for India are just about to arrive and both of these have received plenty of interest. The Xiaomi Redmi Note is riding on the success of the Redmi 1S and Xiaomi Mi3 while the Microsoft Lumia 535 is the first Lumia handset to lose the Nokia branding. They are close in price and so today we have a Redmi Note vs. Lumia 535 Dual SIM India contest.
Both of these devices have been officially launched for India recently. The Lumia 535 will be available from November 28 (tomorrow!) while the first flash sale of the Redmi Note 3G on Flipkart takes place on December 2nd with registrations already open. The Redmi Note is coming in 3G or 4G versions, but for this specs comparison we’re considering the 3G model, which is a dual SIM handset.
Processors
The Redmi Note has a 1.7GHz MediaTek MT6592 octa-core processor with Mali-450MP4 graphics. The Lumia 535 Dual SIM has a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 quad-core processor and Adreno 302 GPU.
Display
The Redmi Note has a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display with resolution of 1280 x 720 and 267 ppi. The Lumia 535 has a 5-inch IPS LCD display with 960 x 540 resolution resulting in 220 ppi.
RAM and Storage
The Xiaomi phone has 2GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage that’s expandable via microSD to 32GB. The Microsoft Lumia handset has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, this time expandable to 128GB.
Camera set-up
The Redmi Note is equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash and 1080p videocapture, as well as a 5-megapixel front-facing unit. The Lumia 535 has a 5-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash and 480p video capture, plus a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.
Battery
The Redmi Note has a removable 3200 mAh battery while the Lumia 535 has a removable 1905 mAh battery.
Redmi Note vs Lumia 535 b
Connectivity
Both phones support 3G, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPRS, EDGE, and microUSB 2.0. The Redmi Note also features WiFi hotspot and WiFi Direct while the Lumia 535 features WiFi hotspot and DLNA.
Operating System
This is a major distinguishing factor between the two. The Redmi Note runs MIUI version 5 based on Android Jelly Bean. The Lumia 535 runs Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim.
Dimensions and Weight
The Redmi Note measures 154mm x 78.7mm x 9.5mm and weighs 199g. The Lumia 535 measures 140.2mm x 72.4mm x 8.8mm and weighs 146g.
Price
Both handsets are priced competitively for the affordable end of the market. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3Glaunched at Rs. 8,999 and the Microsoft Lumia 535 Dual SIM launched at Rs. 9,199, so there’s very little between them.
Much of any decision between these two may come down to a preference of operating platform, so if you are an ardent Android or Windows Phone device fan it’s pretty clear cut. However, on specs alone the Xiaomi phone appears to have all of the advantages. The Redmi Note has a faster processor that’s also an octa-core, a larger display with higher resolution, more RAM, better camera capabilities, and a higher capacity battery.
However, it’s worth pointing out that the Lumia 535 has a higher level of expandable storage, and is a more compact phone with a lighter weight. As well as this we should consider that Lumia handsets are generally readily available across India, but that the Redmi Note is likely to be in hot demand and is only available through flash sales. If the story of the Xiaomi Mi3 and Redmi 1S is repeated then it could be very hard to get hold of.
When deciding between these two phones you will also want to take into account features, designs and after-sales service. It’s always good to hear from our readers in India, so we’d like to know if you will choose the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3G or the Microsoft Lumia 535 Dual SIM? Do send us your comments.

Refurbished HTC One M8 going for $369.99

Getting an unlocked, off-contract HTC One M8 for a good price is no easy feat. The device is still going for above $600 pretty much everywhere else, but right now eBay is running an offer that will let you walk away with HTC’s flagship smartphone for only $369.99.
There is only one catch – it’s a refurbished device. Regardless, it’s a good deal for those looking to get a good phone off-contract without breaking the bank.
Opinion: I am an HTC One M8 user and can tell you with a straight face that I still haven’t found another phone that convinces me to switch. I could say it’s my favorite phone of the year.

Apple could replace Google Search with Yahoo

Apple could replace Google Search with Yahoo

Apple’s contract with Google is ending next year, leaving us wondering what could happen with Google’s presence as the default search engine in the Safari browser. Google lost default rights from Mozilla’s Firefox just last week. Could they be loosing Apple’s support, too?
Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer is working hard to trip Google as it waltzes out of the room with all the cash. Reports claim Apple and Yahoo may be planning on a partnership following next year’s Google contract ending.
Of course, many factors are to be considered. These are still rumors, and we will have to wait and see what happens.
Opinion: Some rumors even say Apple is working on its very own search engine, which would be quite crazy. They managed to pull off Apple Maps, though. While I love Google, I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing some changes.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 was supposed to hit the shelves in the UK

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 was supposed to hit the shelves in the UK tomorrow but there is going to be a small delay. An eager Twitter users asked Samsung Mobile about the launch who confirmed that the flagship phablet will be available a week later than originally planned.
The timeline map released by Samsung a week ago put the UK among the countries where the Galaxy Note 4 will be available on October 10.

That was for Samsung's own stores though, pre-orders for on-contract devices listed October 17 as the shipping date. A good part of Europe will also get the phablet at that date and now it seems so will the UK. Samsung is citing "amazing interest and demand" as the reason for the delay.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 costs around £575 off contract but can be head for free with a contract worth at least £38 a month.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 4 LTE lands in the UK on October 17

The company also said that O2 and EE are going to be one of the first carriers to offer it, but we presume Vodafone and T-Mobile UK are also going to join in.
The entry-level specs sheet of the Galaxy Ace 4 LTE includes a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 4.3" LCD display with 800 x 480 resolution. The phone runs Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box and features Samsung Knox 2.0. At the back of the Galaxy Ace 4 LTE resides a 5MP camera with LED flash. Under the back cover operates a 1,800 mAh Li-Ion battery and the weight of the phone is a hair above 130 grams.
The phone is not to be confused with the Samsung Galaxy Ace Style LTE, which packs an AMOLED display and has a different back cove featuring a cool stripe in the middle. That phone is already available for purchase in Germany with a €199 price tag.

You might consider the minimalist HTC RE camera

NEW YORK—You might consider the minimalist HTC RE camera that the Taiwanese company unveiled Wednesday as the anti-GoPro. While GoPro has been a high flier with its market leading action cameras, HTC, despite getting largely strong reviews for its phones, has been fighting to stay relevant amidst fierce competition in its core market, smartphones.
With the RE, HTC branches out beyond phones.
How HTC will do in this new market remains to be seen, of course, but it's very unlikely that the RE will unseat GoPro anytime soon. Which is precisely why HTC's Nigel Newby-House went to great pains to explain to me how the RE is different.
"This is about viewfinder-less imaging for the rest of us," he says, a camera you might pull out (instead of your camera phone) at kid's parties, barbecues, family gatherings.
Indeed, while GoPro appeals to someone like an adrenaline driven cyclist racing 40 mph down some mountain, RE is targeted more at parents who want to quickly capture Junior pedaling along a bike path at say 5 mph.
The cute $199, 2.3-ounce cylindrical camera looks a bit like a short periscope. You press the single chrome button on the back to snap a 16-megapixel image. Or do a longer press against that button to capture Full HD video. The RE has a 146-degree wide-angle lens.
Though you can also stand RE up on its own it also has a tripod connector. The camera can shoot in slow-motion too and take a time-lapse images as well—perhaps leaving RE outdoors to catch the sunrise.
Don't worry if it rains; RE is waterproof down to a meter in length. Through a companion app you can use your phone as a viewfinder, and also free up space on the device. Speaking of which, RE comes with an 8GB microSD card (expandable to 128 GB)
There's no separate power button on the device. But when you grab the RE along its grip sensor it comes alive ready to shoot.
Re has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and HTC says the battery will last for more than 1000 pictures or about an hour and a half for video. HTC says real-time streaming to YouTube is coming.

Will today’s event see HTC retake the throne?

HTC is in the midst of a period of change as it tries to return not just to profitability, but to sustained growth. The one thing that never seems to change, however, is the quality of HTC’s products, which is always class-leading. HTC’s last big smartphone launch brought the world the beautiful all-aluminum HTC One (M8), which was easily the best Android smartphone of the year until Motorola’s new Moto X came along to spoil HTC’s fun.
Will today’s event see HTC retake the throne?
Rumors have been swirling that HTC may have a new flagship smartphone in store for us during Wednesday’s big event, though the timing seems beyond odd considering it has been just six months since HTC’s M8 first hit store shelves.
Instead, it’s far more likely that today’s event will bring us a new device that fills a different slot in HTC’s lineup.
Will it be a phablet? Will it be a mid-range device? We won’t know for sure until HTC pulls the curtain back during its big event in New York City on Wednesday. Beyond just a phone, however, it looks like we can also expect a big new accessory play from HTC, if recent reports pan out.
HTC’s fall event is scheduled to kick off at 4:00 p.m. EDT / 1:00 p.m. PDT, and you can watch all the action unfold live in HTC’s video stream, which is embedded below.

Ask Google when your next bill is due

Bill alertsAround a fortnight after Google started the broader roll-out of the Bill Alert card in Google Now, the search giant has announced that the consumers will now also be able to ask it for any upcoming due bills.
“When you can’t remember whether you’ve paid your bills—or you simply can’t remember how much money you need to pay—you can now just ask Google,” the company noted in a Google+ post.
According to the company, the users can just tap the mic in Search app or say Ok Google to trigger the voice search and say – “Show me my bills” or “My bills due this week,” to get information about the pending bills. Google uses the billing related emails arriving in your Gmail to provide you with this information. This feature will only work for the consumers, who use Gmail as their primary mailbox and get most, if not all bills, in their Gmail inbox. Also, at this point, Google only seems to be able to read what is written directly in the email body and not the attachment. As many service providers send out bills in the form of attachments, the feature won’t work with such bills.
As the part of the bill-related information, Google will provide the due date, service provider name and amount to be paid.

    iOS 8 multitasking gesture issues

As with any new OS rollout, there are bound to be problems. The iOS 8 update is no exception, and a number of users are reporting various issues with iOS 8 multitasking gestures. The net has been buzzing with users looking for a quick fix as there seems to be a lot of iOS 8 gesture issues in apps at the moment.
A lot of folks are out getting the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus, while others are sitting back and enjoying all that the iOS 8 update has to offer. Regardless of the device, nobody wants to experience problems with a new OS, especially not iOS 8 multitasking gesture problems on a new touchscreen device. Many of the issues have to do with iOS 8 gesture issues in apps, and users are reporting problems swiping with a single digit, multiple fingers and even with pinch to zoom.
A few of the quick fixes mentioned for the iOS 8 multitasking gestures issue include open and closing the notification center and going into settings to turn off multitasking gestures before turning it back on again. Sometimes a quick reboot of an app or process will take care of the issue, it’s a solution Android usersknow very well – that and the battery pull. Unfortunately, that’s not something iPhone users can pull off.
The iOS 8 multitasking gesture problems appears to affect several different devices including iPad’s and iPhones across the board. It’s an issue that folks aren’t too happy about either considering millions have been waiting to get the iOS 8 update. We assume Apple will issue a fix for the iOS 8 gesture issues in apps problem in the very near future.
Are you having problems with iOS 8 multitasking gestures or are have you not had any issues with the new update?
